The government has launched a new Disability Action Plan that will include online resources to help local authorities create accessible playgrounds.

It means “disabled children can rightly enjoy the fun of the playground,” says Mims Davies, minister for disabled people, health and work.

The “wide-ranging plan” includes 32 steps that are aimed at making the UK more accessible and equitable. As well as online resources, the measures also include helping disabled people get into elected office and for the UK to explore whether to put in a bid to host the 2031 Special Olympics World Summer Games.

Sport England’s chief executive Tim Hollingsworth, a disability and access ambassador for sport and physical activity. says there is “no silver bullet” but that the publication “represents a milestone for everyone who cares about tackling inequality and removing the barriers disabled people face on a daily basis.”

The Disability Action Plan is part of a government drive to improve the lives of millions of disabled people which it says has already led to 1.3 million more disabled people being in work now than in 2017.
