A recent webinar hosted by the group behind the EDI Charter highlighted the importance of allyship in supporting colleagues and the role of leadership in cultivating a more inclusive culture. It will now inform an action plan to be rolled out this autumn and beyond.
Hosted by Gamiel Yafai, director of Diversity Marketplace, the webinar shared key findings on fostering inclusion with the sector.
“Our focus on allyship and practical action is essential for creating meaningful and lasting change, ensuring that diversity and inclusion are at the heart of our industry’s future,” says Yafai, who has been working as an independent consultant to the charter group.
The idea for the Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) Charter for the Horticulture, Arboriculture, Landscaping, and Garden Media professions was first formed following the British Association of Landscape Industries’ Access All Areas webinar.
It was then signed at FutureScape 2022, with representatives from across the industry committing to developing guidance for implementing best practices and policies and fostering a more inclusive and equitable industry.
Adrian Wickham, vice-chair of the British Association of Landscape Industries and one of those who spearheaded the charter, says: “The EDI Charter represents a significant step forward in our collective journey towards a more inclusive horticultural industry. By aligning our policies and practices, we are not just opening doors but also actively supporting the growth and progression of all individuals in our sector. This collaborative effort is a testament to our commitment to breaking down barriers and fostering a culture where everyone can thrive.”
