Award-winning garden designer Manoj Malde has published his first book, Your Outdoor Room: How to Design a Garden You Can Live In.
Launching today, the how-to guide breaks down the process of designing a garden to help readers undertake the process themselves.
It includes how to source inspiration for the design, put together planting plans and incorporate sustainability and biodiversity, through to choosing materials and aftercare considerations.

Your Outdoor Room: How to Design a Garden You Can Live In by Manoj Malde
Your Outdoor Room offers readers “an award-winning designer who can hold their hand and guide them step by step” on how to design their own garden, says Malde. “It could be that they’ve bought their first property and they’re real garden enthusiasts who want a beautiful space but don’t necessarily have the budget to engage a garden designer.”
He hopes that the book will also raise awareness of the value of garden designers, so that when they come to buy their second home, for instance, they might commission or consult a garden designer. He also encourages reader to use the right skillset through contractors where possible.
Malde says he was approached to write the book after the editor spotted his appearance on BBC Two’s Your Garden Made Perfect, which gives viewers a behind the scenes look at the work undertaken by garden designers and landscape contractors.
As well as being the RHS ambassador for diversity and inclusivity, Malde made RHS Chelsea Flower Show history last year when he and his partner, Clive Gillmor, became the first couple to get married on a show garden.
