The Landscape Institute is one of five built environment institutes to renew its pledge to tackle urgent global challenges.

With almost 70% of the world’s population predicted to live in urban environments by 2050, members of the UK Built Environment Advisory Group (UKBEAG) commit to working together for at least another five years.

The group, which launched in 2016, is a collaboration between the Landscape Institute (LI), the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI), and the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE).

Its purpose is to provide a more effective conduit for globally sharing built environment expertise to support countries tackling rapid urbanisation, the climate emergency, displacement after crises and post conflict recovery.

“Collaboration is fundamental to our global response to emergencies in climate, biodiversity, and health,” says Landscape Institute CEO Robert Hughes.

“Sustainable urban development is at the nexus of these combined challenges, requiring a diverse range of skills and expertise to deliver, in changing social and environmental contexts.

He goes on to underscore the value of land-based skills in tackling the aforementioned emergencies: “Landscape professionals provide integrated, nature-based solutions to planning and development, and we are delighted to continue working with colleagues in UKBEAG, and around the world, to help realise a greener, healthier global built environment.”
