A large gas container is set to be transformed into an indoor botanical garden in the latest plans for Eden Project Dundee unveilved by lead architect FCBStudios.

At 62m in diameter, the gas container is the site’s largest structure. It will become a living exhibit to inform and educate the public on ‘past fossil fuel use and the future’s dependence on change.’

The Eden Project Dundee is set to revitalise an old gasworks location on the Dundee waterfront, drawing on Scotland’s heritage to create an educational and regenerative green tourism space.

The project’s site on East Dock Street, owned by National Grid and SGN, has a 230-year history of being at the centre of the carbon-based energy industry. The design and construction plan will see the restoration of the site’s biodiversity through multi pocket habitats and the reuse of materials to create a pedagogic facility.

Rachel Sayers, partner at FCBStudios says: “The project will enable social and economic regeneration, building communities and Eden’s ambition to give people wisdom around reconnection to the natural world.

“We are looking forward to listening to more to people in Dundee during the upcoming consultation, to inform the design development.“

A planning application is due to be submitted this autumn, following a consultation process including public engagement sessions and online feedback tools, continuing the project’s formal process of public consultation.
