‘Urgent’ action needed says new LI and BALI report

by | 08 Mar 24 | Commercial Landscaping, News, Sustainability

New report tackling carbon reduction in the landscape sector launched by the Landscape Institute (LI) and British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI).

The report, Landscape and Carbon is positioned as a direct response to the UK’s target to reach net zero by 2050.

It outlines the actions being undertaken by the sector and how best landscape can provide solutions for reducing and sequestering carbon in development.

Calling to action the landscape sector and wider industry to work collaboratively and use its combined skills to reduce carbon in landscape schemes and works.

Together, the LI and BALI will build on the existing work put in place by the sector to agree on carbon methodology, put standard data and practical tools in place and support the sector in improving the level of awareness and skills needed.

Setting out eight key recommendations for future action, these are, agree upon a carbon assessment process, use standard data and tools and work with suppliers.

As well as supporting landscape practitioners, building better understanding, improvising education and training, promoting landscape solutions and creating a cross-sector action plan.

“Landscape has a vital role to play in capturing and storing carbon,” says LI CEO, Robert Hughes. “Collaboration and openness will be vital to take these recommendations forward.”

Wayne Grills, CEO of BALI adds: “The recommendations laid out provide a strong call to action for the industry to unite and work together to successfully support both our own, and other industries, in reducing carbon.”The two organisations are inviting stakeholders from across the landscape sector and wider industry to engage and collaborate in a series of working groups.
