A funding initiative has been launched to support the rollout of edible skatepark landscapes across the UK.

The Planet Good Earth Fund recognises the mental health and wellbeing that these spaces can offer young people by bringing together skateboarding and community gardening.

It was announced at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show, where a granite skate ramp formed the centrepiece of The Planet Good Earth Garden in the Great Pavilion.

The edible exhibit has been designed by Urban Organic and skatepark design and construction practice Betongpark in partnership with UK CIC Planter Good Earth, a horticultural platform that aims to inspire the next generation of gardeners.

Jack Astbury, founder of Urban Organic – which specialises in creating edible landscapes – says the garden is “inspired by urban foraging and skating around city plazas”.

“A skateable garden at Chelsea is unheard of so to unveil one to guests is really exciting. Offering guests, and especially young people, the chance to educate themselves on the possibilities of growing and foraging their own food is a unique feature of the garden which will be great to see.”

After Chelsea, The Planet Good Earth Garden will be relocated to Hay Castle Trust in Hay-on-Wye, where it will be supported by Black Mountains College.
