Garden design duo Carolyn Harden and Jon Jarvis are seeking support for their RHS Tatton Flower Show 2024 garden- dedicated to raising awareness for skin cancer.

The 1804 Garden, which resides at just over 3002m- making it the biggest garden at this year’s show- is designed to promote awareness of melanoma skin cancer in the construction industry.

Research shows that, in the UK, working outdoors in the sun leads to around five melanoma cases and one death a week.

Construction workers diagnosed with melanoma were found to have the highest number of deaths.

Promoting the charities Band of Builders and Melanoma UK, the 1804 garden is named in reference to the date melanoma was first referred to in the medical world.

Inspired by the yellow and black radiation symbol, the garden is in the shape of an equilateral triangle with three served blades emanating from a central point, encompassed by a variety of trees and wildflowers to attract insects and pollinators.

Students at Leeds College are building a 5’ bug hotel to feature in the garden.

Three large raised steel planters are set between the served seating, with a selection of elegant parasol trees offering partial shade. The planting palette consists of majority white blooms with punctuations of warm yellows.

At the heart of the garden, a circular water feature plays host to an open sphere made up of steel rings. The sphere is not completely bound by the rings – some, detached and levitating above the water surface, symbolising the eradication of cancerous cells and the process of healing.

The garden will be the biggest at RHS Tatton in July (17 – 21), it will then feature on a smaller scale at Southport Flower Show in August before being relocated to The Harbour NHS mental health hospital near Blackpool.

The project will cost in the region of £30k, Harden and Jarvis are offering sponsorship opportunities for elements throughout the garden. They have also set up a crowdfunding page to raise additional funds for the garden.
