Plans to establish six ‘mini-woodland’ across Thanet, Kent, have been approved in an effort to tackle the biodiversity and climate crisis.

The Mini-Woodland Tree Planting Scheme will see four hectares of new woodland in the area, increasing local biodiversity and supporting the district’s net-zero by 2030 target, says Thanet District Council.

Councillors have approved the following six planting locations (in hectares), Dane Valley Road, Margate (1.2), Garlinge Recreation Ground, Margate (0.5), Memorial Recreation Ground, Broadstairs (0.4), Northdown Park, Margate (0.8), St Peter’s Recreation Ground, Broadstairs (0.6), and Tivoli Park, Margate (0.5).

The new woodlands have the potential to absorb approximately 1,140 tonnes of carbon emissions over the next 30 years.

Director for environment at Thanet District Council, says: “Mini-woodlands are just one of the initiatives we are pursuing to protect our environment and keep Thanet a green and vibrant place to live.”

With the locations approved, the plans are now subject to external funding being secured.
