Plans have been submitted to restore the UK’s largest remaining cluster of Victorian gas holders.
In the proposal put forward by developer Berkeley Group’s St William division, 2,100 new homes are planned within the 9 hectare east London heritage site.
The seven disused Grade II listed gas holder frames will contain 10-storey blocks with six extra 15-20 storeys cylindrical buildings encompassing.
Structural steel engineers Craddy and Shepley have collaborated on the project to reuse the cast iron gas holder structures, built between 1870 and 1882.
Community space and facilities covered with one of the gas holder iron frames is planned adjacent to a central circular lake, with 1,700sq m of flexible commercial / non-residential space.
Berkeley Homes also plans to deliver a TwelveTrees Park scheme next to the Bromley by Bow Gasworks site.
